Exercise

I've been a member of Curves for about 2 years. I have gone through phases of working out regularly and not working out. I usually lose the drive to work out when I've plateaued in weight. But on the mornings when I do workout, I feel better and have more energy. Sometimes I chose to sleep in instead of exercising. Kyle wonders why I don't go in the afternoons. I don't like to go after work because I'm tired, I want to unwind, and when I have class Curves isn't open that late.

But I have a renewed desire to exercise and lose weight. I've started the Curves SmartTrek. What I like about this is that it is computerized. The gadget can tell how much strength you are using on the machine. It lets you know if you are working too hard or not enough. It counts your reps. It tells you when your circuit is done. It tells you your muscle strengths and weaknesses. And, it tells you how many calories you burned in your workout.

Today I had my highest calorie burning workout, 616 calories! Wow! Saturday I burned 604 calories and that had been my highest. Today I really worked it because I wanted to burn about as much. I'm psyched.

Another thing that I've been doing is walking in the evenings with Kyle. We go around 8pm. We started walking 1 mile and now we are up to 2.2 miles. I am more motivated to go walking when someone goes with me. We prompt each other when it is time to go. Sometimes we have good conversations on our walks, other times it is a comfortable silence (except for the heavy breathing). I'd like to know how many calories we burn on our walk so I'll be google-ing that.

I'm hoping to lose a bunch of weight by Christmas. It would be nice to get a new wardrobe for a Christmas gift.

Cats

I have 3 cats. I like cats. They are independent and you don't have to do much with them. Just brush them, feed them, and attend to their litter box. You don't have to entertain them, exercise them, etc. Kyle teases me that I'm just one cat away from being the Crazy Cat Lady. While I like my cats, they are not my kids. I don't view them as my babies. If one got hit by a car I would be sad, "Aww" but I wouldn't feel the need to replace them, or have a memorial for them.

I like dogs. I don't have a dog but I would like one. Kyle says I can have a dog if I get rid of a few cats. Also, we would need to fix our fence which got broken by our last dog, who was a notorious escape artist. I'm hoping I can talk him into buying me a dog as a graduation present.

I view myself as an animal lover. I like pets. I hate to see animals abused or mistreated. But I don't put pets above humans as some people do.

There has been this stray white tom cat around the neighborhood. I don't know if he belonged to anyone in the neighborhood for he had no collar and he just looked mange-y. This cat is a nuisance. He teases and torments the neighbor's dog. He poops in her flower garden. He bothers my cats. He gets into fights with them. He made a big gash in Paco's leg (my gray kitty) which got infected. Paco's leg swelled up and he couldn't bear weight on it. After an antibiotic shot from the vet he began to heal.

The white cat also gets into Kyle's garage and sprays his scent everywhere. YUCK! This is Kyle's man-cave. You don't mess with his man-cave. It's bad enough that I put the litter box there so it wouldn't stink up the house.

So one night, we happened to notice that he was in the garage, again. We were able to trap him in there. We put this cat out of our misery. I will spare you the details, but let's just say, "Good riddance!"

Naomi Thinks...

OK, so I copied this idea from Emma's blog. But she copied it from somebody else's blog, so what goes around comes around. You do a google search by just typing your name and the word 'thinks' and see what happens. Naomi Thinks...

Naomi thinks it could happen
emphasis on the could

Naomi thinks it's important to name names
so you know who you're dealing with

Naomi thinks working out in the middle of the work day is the best thing ever.
Um, I disagree, I think the best time is in the morning before you go to work. Before you are tired from work.

Naomi thinks that Obasan is the same as old women in France, or Mexico, or anywhere else on earth.
this is a Japanese story

Naomi thinks it is good and bad that Skyla came back into their lives.
I don't know who Skyla is, but I'm glad she's back

Naomi thinks that Congress needs to be vigilant in making sure that the money actually goes for stimulus, and doesn't get stolen by banks around the world --
sure I do.

Naomi thinks television is the devil and avoids it at all costs.
I think it must be opposite day because that is the opposite of what I think.

Naomi thinks she may get her wish.
I wish

Naomi thinks she has life figured out.
You betcha!

Naomi thinks she has the world worked out, and puts people into pigeonholes:
well, where else would I put them?

Naomi thinks too much of herself.
I won't dignify this with a response.

Naomi thinks that he must have been able to reason with her because she finally was able to stop weeping.
and begin sobbing and wailing.

I Gotta New Set of Wheels!

The teal blue Dodge Caravan died. It died while I was at a friend's house for her birthday party. So Kyle had to come pick us up. Later, we came back and replaced the distributor cap. The minivan started up right away. Yay! I was able to drive in home. The next morning we are getting in the minivan to go to church, it wouldn't start. So we had to take two other vehicles to church because we can't all fit in the El Camino or the Neon.

We have a big trip to a family reunion in Nevada planned and possibly going to Wyoming to. The choice, to spend money to fix the minivan, rent a van for the trip or buy a new minivan. We decide to try to buy a new minivan.

We looked at three different dealers. The first one had a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. It was blue, had 2 bench seats, fabric upholstery. It had a/c, luggage rack and lots of storage space in the back. It had 44,000 miles on it. They were asking $12,900. The next one was a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan. It was silver, had 2 bench seats, fabric upholstery. It had a/c, luggage rack, lots of storage and a DVD player & screen. We took it for a test drive. It was really nice. We especially liked the DVD player and the low miles. It had 33,900 miles on it. They were asking $11,600. The third minivan was a 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It was red and it had leather upholstery, captain chairs instead of a middle bench, a/c, DVD player & screen, luggage rack, and not as much storage as the other 2 vans. It had 61,000 miles on it and they were asking $7995.

The decision was hard. We narrowed it done to either the silver or the red. We liked that they both had the DVD. We liked the low mileage of the silver, but also like the features of the red.
But we finally decided on which one, then it was just a matter of getting an auto loan.

We tried one credit union. They seemed to have changed some loan policies that made it difficult to get a no-money down loan from them. So, we tried another credit union that was recommended by one of the car dealers. The second credit union was a dream to work with. There didn't seem to be any problems with the vehicle we were choosing, there weren't problems with our debt-to-income ratio. The whole process was painless.

So which vehicle did we pick? The Oldsmobile Silhouette Premiere edition.

Scholarship

So I got a letter from BYU saying that I was nominated for the McKay School of Education Dean's Scholarship. HURRAY!!! The amount awarded is the cost of my tuition for Fall & Winter semesters. Kyle and I did a hooptie dance. "oh yeah! Uh-huh!" I had been trying to save for these upcoming semesters. I am entering the Special Education program. I have a lot more credit hours, which equates to more money needed for the higher tuition. I figured I'd still get my Pell Grant which helps. But the remaining tuition and cost of books...

Also, because of the times that some of my classes start I will need to leave work early. So now I not only have higher education costs, but lower paychecks coming in due to shortened work hours. Now I was going to have to worry also about my monthly expenses/bills.

But, the news of the scholarship has taken a load off. I won't need to come up with the tuition myself, I hopefully can use the Pell Grant for purchasing my text books and the money I had been saving I can use toward bills this fall.

The scholarship came with some stipulations like maintaining a 3.0 gpa, taking at least 12 credits each semester and submitting a letter of appreciation which I will be sending off tomorrow.

This news of scholarship couldn't come at a better time. We have been hit financially with the minivan breaking down (so now we don't have a working vehicle that fits all of us and we are deciding whether to fix it or buy a new one), and the water heater breaking down (which we just bought a new one from Home Depot) and now the dishwasher has broken down ( and we are on the look out for another one). Life is just a crap shoot isn't, full of ups and downs. This scholarship is certainly an up.
